Over the coming weeks I expect to have a bunch of new things to share, but in the meantime I thought it might be fun to check out some of my older work.
Way back in 2007 I began providing pen & ink illustrations for a new film blog Good is the New Bad, and the image above depicting Clive Owen from Children of Men is the first one I did. Working with pen & ink is an interesting departure from my usual painted work. Things such as line weight and the use of negative space can carry a greater impact, for instance. It's so easy to go overboard with the linework as well, which can kill an image. I found the hardest part is knowing when to stop. I did quite a few of these illustrations over a two year period. Overall I had a lot of fun working on them.

I've added eight of these ink drawings to my Found Myself gallery, which are all available for purchase. Below are a few more examples.

Sketches For Sale

Every once in a while I'm asked about purchasing my sketches. In the past it's not something I've done, mostly because I mainly focus on the paintings. So I thought it might be fun to put a few out there for those interested in them.

I belong to an art community site www.foundmyself.com, which allows users the option to sell their work. To start I've put up twelve sketches that are more or less character studies for my paintings. They're all 11 x 14 inches, graphite on paper for $50.00 each. If they sell well I may dive back into my sketchbooks for some more. Please click H ERE for the direct link.

APW Gallery Show: World of Imagination Vol. 3

Hi all. So I've been invited to participate in a group exhibition at The APW Gallery in March 2010, the theme of which is Imagination. I think I might try to do it time permitting. Each artist can submit up to five paintings, and I'll probably loosely base mine on films if I choose to do it. I spent about fifteen minutes thinking about good films I'd like to interpret with this theme, so I've created a tentative list of my choices.

They are:
1. Pan's Labyrinth
2. The Fountain
3. Cashback
4. Big Fish
5. Dark City

I don't even know if I'll have time to do all of these. They have to be 12 x 12 inches, so I can't go too crazy anyway. Are there any films that would be better choices for the theme of Imagination? I tried to select films I haven't done anything with before, but just wanted to throw this out there and see if there was any feedback you'd like to provide. Thanks guys.

The Milk Bar

It's been a while since I've posted anything. I try not to go too long without writing about something, but sometimes my workload can get the best of me.

Back to the topic at hand, I've recently completed a new painting based on the Stanley Kubrick film A Clockwork Orange. The poster is title The Milk Bar and as with the other posters, it is available online at OnePoster and Grindstore. Below I'd like to share the process of the painting from sketch to final.

Here we have the sketch laying out the composition. The scene depicted should be recognizable to those who have seen the film. I really didn't alter it very much, except for the inclusion of the statues on the left and right. The two droogs on either end seemed to be leering at them, which I thought would be effective in alluding to the sexual themes of the film.

With paint on the canvas I found there was a nice balance between complimentary colors purple and yellow. The mood of the painting felt established.

With most of my paintings I find it's most effective to work from the background to the foreground. The most challenging aspect of this painting was trying to replicate to
he color of the mirror image statues on the left and right. A lot of back and forth painting went on. The finished painting was done with acrylic on canvas, measuring 16 x 36 inches. The original is available for purchase for those interested, just drop me an e-mail at justin@justinreedart.com.

Gallery Show: Off The Wall

Gallery Show: Odds & Ends

This is sort of two posts in one, since both bits of news are related. My painting The Good The Bad and The Ugly, shown above, will be a part of the Odds & Ends group show at Tradition, a sneaker and clothing boutique in Westlake Villiage, CA. The painting has been framed and will be available for purchase through the gallery. The opening reception will be held Friday May 8th, from 7-11pm. The show will continue until June 7th. In a related bit of news I received word a few days ago that this same painting has been Chosen by American Illustration as a part of their 28th annual competition. This means it will appear on their website in November.

So for anyone interested in purchasing a professionally recognized painting, you will have your opportunity at Tradition.

Gallery Show: Sketch It Out

Recently I was invited to participate in a gallery show at the APW Gallery in NYC called Sketch It Out. The criteria for the show was that each artist could submit up to five sketches, each 8.5 x 11 inches or less on paper. The rest is left to the artist. Naturally I went with something movie-themed. Each of my five sketches involves a film I've wanted to do something with for a while, just never had the time. This seemed like a good opportunity. Here is a look at them:

The five films are Taxi Driver, The Godfather, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Casablanca and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. They were done with acrylic on 100% Cotton paper, measuring 5.5 x 9 inches. They will each be priced at $150.00.

These will only be sold through the gallery, so if anyone is looking to purchase one, you'll have to go to the show. The opening reception is April 3rd 2009 from 6-8pm, and will run until April 27th. The gallery is located at 48-18 Van Dam St- Long Island City, NYC 11101

Process: The Dark Knight

Recently finished my first painting of The Dark Knight. Here's a look at the process from sketch to final.

I've been thinking about doing something like this for a while, so I've decided it's finally time. This will be a space for me to make announcements about anything going on that may be of some interest to people. I'd also like to use it to discuss my current projects, past work, anything that I think people might enjoy reading about and perhaps commenting on. One of the issues I've had with my website was I felt it was a little one-sided. With this my goal is to open more of a dialogue with people to make things a bit more inclusive.
